Market situation where futures prices in the distant delivery months are gradually lower. For example, if February gold is $ 1600.00 per ounce and June gold is $ 1550.00 per ounce, then it is a backwardation in four months compared to $ 50.00 per ounce in January. (Backwardation is an opposition to contango)
