Pip size is a market convention: 0.0001 for most pairs, 0.01 for yen pairs. Brokers differ in quote precision — the fifth decimal is a pipette, a tenth of a pip. For exotics, CFDs and indices the instrument specification at your broker decides, which is why this field can be overwritten.

How pip value is calculated

The calculation has two parts. First the pip value in the quote currency, which is a plain product: pip size times the number of units traded. A standard lot is 100,000 units of the base currency, so on a pair with the dollar on the other side a pip comes to 10 dollars, on a mini lot 1 dollar and on a micro lot 10 cents.

The second part is the conversion into your account currency, and that is the step most often skipped. Trade USD/JPY with a euro account and you get the pip in yen first; only the JPY/EUR rate turns it into the figure you will see on your statement. Frequently asked

Does pip size differ from broker to broker?
The pip size itself does not — it is a market convention, 0.0001 on most pairs and 0.01 on pairs quoted in yen. What brokers differ in is quote precision: most now show five decimals, and the fifth is a pipette, a tenth of a pip.
Why does the calculator show a different value from my platform?
Usually because the platform counts in pipettes rather than pips, so in tenths. The other reason is a different contract size — with CFDs on indices, commodities or shares a lot is not 100,000 units and follows the instrument specification.
What is a pipette?
A tenth of a pip: the fifth decimal on ordinary pairs and the third on yen pairs. When you see a quote of 1.08345, that last digit is not a pip but a pipette.
How is pip value calculated on yen pairs?
The same way, just with a different pip size. On USD/JPY the pip is 0.01, so a standard lot gives 0.01 × 100,000 = 1,000 yen per pip.
