Precious metals — market overview
Precious metals are traditional safe-haven assets that tend to perform well in uncertain periods, during high inflation and when the dollar is weak. Gold and silver act as a hedge for investors, while platinum, palladium and rhodium are critical inputs to automotive catalytic converters. The prices are shaped by central-bank purchases, US real interest rates, physical demand (jewellery, industrial use, reserves) and mining supply.

US real interest rates
The yield on 10-year TIPS bonds (nominal minus inflation) is the main driver of the gold price. Low real rates = friendly environment for gold.
Dollar strength (DXY)
Gold is priced in USD; a weaker dollar makes it cheaper in other currencies, which lifts demand.
Central-bank buying
China, India, Poland, Turkey and Russia are major reserve buyers. Aggregate central-bank purchases have run at record levels in recent years.
