Soft commodities — market overview

Soft commodities are the tropical and Mediterranean agricultural products — coffee (Arabica, Robusta), cocoa, sugar, cotton, orange-juice concentrate, lumber and rubber. These prices are highly sensitive to weather risks (Brazil frosts, Vietnam monsoons, West African cocoa belts), changes in planted area and storage costs. Coffee and cocoa are the most liquid soft contracts, often with 30–50% annual volatility.

What drives soft commodities prices?

The key fundamental factors market participants track day-to-day across this category.

1

Weather anomalies

Brazilian coffee frost (June winter), West African cocoa disease, Australian sugarcane drought, Vietnamese Robusta monsoon — direct supply shocks.

2

ICE inventories and planted area

ICE Futures coffee and cocoa inventories near historic lows amplify price moves. Planted-area expansion (or contraction) sets multi-year trends.

3

Brazilian real (BRL)

Brazil is the main exporter of coffee, sugar and orange juice. A weaker BRL lowers export prices; a stronger BRL lifts them.

4

Substitute demand

Shifts between sugar and high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS), or between Arabica and Robusta in coffee blends, have medium-term price effects.
